The instrument cluster is one of the most important electronic modules in a modern Ford. It displays essential information such as vehicle speed, engine speed, fuel level, warning lights and other vehicle information, while also communicating with other control modules around the vehicle.
When the cluster develops an internal electronic fault, the symptoms can range from intermittent warning lights and gauges to communication problems or a cluster that stops functioning correctly.

What does a Ford instrument cluster do?
The instrument cluster is much more than a collection of gauges.

One common Ford cluster failure: cracked solder joints
One of the faults we regularly investigate on selected Ford instrument clusters is cracking or deterioration of solder joints around the connector area of the circuit board.
Over time, vibration, temperature changes and normal vehicle use can contribute to solder joints developing microscopic cracks.
A poor connection can result in an intermittent electrical connection between the connector and the circuit board.
This can lead to communication problems and intermittent cluster operation.
The exact failure depends on the particular cluster and PCB revision, so a symptom or fault code alone isn't enough to confirm that this is the cause.
The module needs to be properly assessed.
Why can a solder joint cause such a big problem?
A modern instrument cluster contains a large amount of electronics within a relatively small circuit board.
The connectors provide the electrical connections between the cluster and the vehicle wiring.
If an important connection becomes unreliable, the cluster may lose power, communication or another required signal.
Because the cluster communicates with other modules over the vehicle's network, one internal connection problem can sometimes result in several different symptoms.
This is one reason why electronic diagnosis is important before replacing the complete cluster.

However, a fault code does not automatically prove that the instrument cluster itself is faulty.
The vehicle's power supplies, grounds, wiring and CAN communication network should also be considered when diagnosing a communication problem.
This is why we recommend diagnosing the vehicle and module rather than replacing parts based solely on a fault code.
Why repair your original cluster?
Cheaper than a replacement
A replacement cluster can be considerably more expensive than repairing a known electronic fault.
Keep your original module
Repairing your original unit means you don't have to rely on a replacement module of unknown history. A replacement module will also require programming to your vehicle as well as the milage calibrating to match your original.
Avoid unnecessary replacement
If the problem is caused by an internal electronic fault, replacing the complete module may not be necessary.
Specialist electronic repair
Our repairs are carried out at electronic/component level where appropriate rather than simply replacing the complete assembly.

The module is tested using our available bench-testing procedures before being returned to the customer.
6. Return the module
Once the repair and testing are complete, the cluster is securely packaged and returned.

Important: not every Ford cluster fault is the same
Although some Ford instrument clusters have well-known failure patterns, there are many different cluster designs and revisions.
A cluster that appears completely dead could have a power supply problem, communication issue, internal electronic failure or another fault elsewhere in the vehicle.
Similarly, a communication fault code doesn't necessarily mean that the cluster needs repairing.
Correct diagnosis is important.
If you have already checked the vehicle's power supplies, grounds and communication network and the cluster remains faulty, a specialist module repair may be worth considering.
