Fiat SRS No Communication Repair Guide

Fiat Airbag Module No Communication – Diagnosis, Testing & Repair

Many Fiat models can suffer from an SRS/airbag control module no-communication fault, where diagnostic equipment is unable to establish communication with the airbag control module.

Common symptoms include an illuminated airbag warning light, no communication with the SRS module during a diagnostic scan, and communication-related faults stored within other control modules on the vehicle.

At VSR, we provide specialist electronic testing and repair for selected Fiat SRS/airbag control modules affected by this problem.

This guide explains the common symptoms, the initial diagnostic checks you can carry out, the module power and communication pinout, and how to determine whether the SRS module itself may be responsible.

What Does "No Communication With Airbag Module" Mean?

The SRS (Supplemental Restraint System) module, also commonly referred to as the airbag control module, monitors and controls important parts of the vehicle's restraint system.

The module also communicates with other electronic control units around the vehicle.

When a diagnostic scan reports no communication with the airbag/SRS module, it means the diagnostic equipment has been unable to establish communication with the control unit.

This does not automatically mean the SRS module has failed.

Possible causes can include:

  • Missing power supply

  • Poor or missing ground

  • Wiring damage

  • Connector problems

  • Vehicle communication/network faults

  • Internal electronic failure of the SRS module

For this reason, some basic vehicle-side checks should be carried out before replacing the airbag module.

Common Fiat SRS No Communication Symptoms

A Fiat affected by this problem may display one or more of the following symptoms:

  • Airbag/SRS warning light illuminated

  • No communication with the airbag module using diagnostic equipment

  • Airbag module missing from a complete vehicle scan

  • Other modules reporting lost communication with the airbag control module

  • Fuel cut-off related errors

  • Airbag system fault messages

  • Communication-related diagnostic trouble codes

  • Flashing Milage

The exact symptoms and stored fault codes can vary depending on the vehicle and module fitted.

How to Diagnose a Fiat SRS Module No Communication Fault

Before removing or replacing the airbag control module, there are several checks that can help establish whether the problem is within the vehicle or the SRS module itself.

Step 1 – Carry Out a Complete Vehicle Scan

Start by carrying out a complete diagnostic scan of the vehicle, rather than attempting to communicate only with the airbag module.

Check which control modules are communicating and whether the SRS module is the only module that cannot be accessed.

If several unrelated control modules are also unavailable, there may be a wider vehicle electrical or communication-network problem that should be investigated first.

If the rest of the vehicle communicates normally but the diagnostic equipment cannot establish communication with the SRS module, continue with the following checks.

Step 2 – Check the SRS Module Power & Ground

For the applicable Fiat SRS modules covered by this repair service, the main connections to check are:

Pin Function
A1 Ground
A2 +12V Supply
A8 GM S CAN / Communication

Important: Always confirm that the pinout is applicable to your exact module/vehicle before carrying out electrical testing.

Pin A1 – Ground

Check the ground connection at Pin A1.

The module requires a good ground connection to operate correctly. A missing or high-resistance ground can prevent the module from powering and communicating normally.

Where possible, the integrity of the ground circuit should be checked rather than relying only on a basic voltage measurement.

Pin A2 – +12V Supply

Check for the required battery supply at Pin A2.

If the module doesn't receive the required supply, it cannot operate correctly and communication may not be possible.

If the supply is missing, the vehicle's wiring, fuses and related circuits should be investigated before condemning the SRS module.

Step 3 – Check the Communication Circuit

For the applicable modules:

Pin A8 – GM S CAN / Communication

Check the communication wiring between the SRS module and the vehicle.

The circuit should be checked for issues including:

  • Open circuits

  • Short to ground

  • Short to supply

  • Connector damage

  • Wiring damage

  • Other vehicle network faults

A problem with the vehicle-side communication circuit can produce symptoms very similar to an internally failed SRS module.

Step 4 – Assess Your Results

If you have established that:

  • Other vehicle modules communicate normally

  • Ground at Pin A1 is satisfactory

  • +12V is present at Pin A2

  • The communication circuit at Pin A8 has been checked

  • There are no obvious connector or vehicle-side wiring problems

  • The SRS module still cannot be accessed with suitable diagnostic equipment

then an internal electronic fault within the SRS module becomes much more likely.

At this point, specialist bench testing of the module can help determine whether the SRS control unit itself has failed.

Important Diagnostic Information

Correct power and ground readings alone do not prove that the airbag module is faulty.

Vehicle communication faults and wiring problems can sometimes produce exactly the same no-communication symptoms.

The complete diagnostic picture should therefore be considered before replacing or repairing the module.

Not sure whether the module is faulty?

VSR offers a Module Diagnostic/Test Service.

You can post the module to us and we can assess whether the unit itself is operating and communicating correctly before you commit to the full repair service.

Can a Fiat SRS Module With No Communication Be Repaired?

In many cases, yes.

If the vehicle-side power supply, ground and communication wiring have been checked and the module remains inaccessible, an internal electronic failure may be preventing the SRS module from operating correctly.

Rather than automatically replacing the complete module, VSR can test selected units and carry out component-level electronic repair where appropriate.

This allows the vehicle's original SRS module to be retained.

Why Repair Your Original Fiat Airbag Module?

Keep the Original Module

The original module fitted to the vehicle is repaired and returned to you rather than being exchanged for an unknown used unit.

Retain the Original Data

Where the original module is successfully repaired for the no-communication fault, its existing programming and vehicle-specific data can be retained.

Avoid Finding a Compatible Replacement

Replacement SRS modules may have different hardware, software, configuration or part numbers.

Repairing the original unit can avoid some of the complications associated with sourcing and programming a replacement.

Potentially Reduce Repair Costs

Repairing an internal electronic fault is alos more economical than purchasing and configuring a replacement control unit.

How Does VSR Repair the Module?

Once your Fiat SRS module arrives at VSR, we assess the unit and confirm the reported problem.

The module's electronic circuitry can then be inspected and tested to determine whether an internal fault is responsible for the loss of communication.

Where the fault falls within the scope of our service, the appropriate component-level electronic repair is carried out.

The repaired module is then tested using our available bench-testing procedures before being returned.

The detailed component-level repair procedure itself isn't published as part of this guide, as this forms part of our specialist repair service.

Will My Fiat SRS Module Need Coding After Repair?

When we successfully repair your original SRS module for the electronic no-communication fault, its existing data is retained.

This avoids the replacement-module programming or configuration that may otherwise be required when fitting another control unit.

Any separate faults elsewhere within the vehicle's SRS system will still need to be diagnosed and repaired separately.

No Communication Repair vs Crash Data Reset

These are two different SRS module services.

No Communication Repair

This service is intended for an SRS module that cannot be accessed normally with diagnostic equipment because of an electronic fault.

Crash Data Reset

A module may communicate normally but contain crash/event data following an accident.

This requires a different service.

If your module communicates normally but has stored crash data, please select the appropriate SRS Crash Data Reset Service or contact VSR if you're unsure.

UK-Wide Fiat SRS Module Repair

VSR provides a UK-wide postal repair service, so the complete vehicle doesn't need to come to us.

The process is simple:

  1. Check the vehicle and module using the diagnostic information above.

  2. Confirm that your module part number is supported.

  3. Purchase the appropriate VSR repair service.

  4. Remove and securely package your SRS module.

  5. Post the module to VSR.

  6. We inspect, repair and test your module.

  7. Your original repaired module is returned to you.
