Function Deletes & Tuning Services

At VSR we offer function delete and tuning services, for specifics we will include a list below. These services we can offer mobile or at our workshop based in Mossley, Tameside.

If your looking to book in for one of these services then please call us or contact us using the 'contact us' page.

If you are not sure if you require one of these services then here is some information surrounding the most common services and what they do for you:

Before we start we would like to note that most emissions-related function deletes (DPF, EGR, AdBlue) are illegal for vehicles using the UK roads. Although these deletes can not be detected via an MOT and many many road users have opted for these deletes over the costly repairs, it is still not legal to use a vehicle which has had a emissions related function delete on UK roads.

DPF Delete: A DPF (diesel particulate filter) is a filter which is installed onto diesel vehicles exhaust system. This filter helps to reduce the pollutants going into the atmosphere, in theory its a good idea. Unfortunately these filters get blocked up causing an engine warning light to illuminate and in most cases putting your vehicle into limp mode (reduced power). These filters get blocked for a few reasons, mainly there is another engine fault in the system, which may or may not bring on an engine warning light, vehicle and fault dependant. This is the most common cause which garages overlook, this can lead them into cleaning your DPF and the light coming back after a short period of time. The second cause for some vehicles is that you are not driving the car for a long enough distance for the exhaust to get hot enough to regen (regen - the vehicles way of cleaning the DPF, it does this by getting the DPF hot to burn off the soot accumulated inside). Because of the issues with them blocking up and the high cost to have them manually cleaned at a garage, as well as the inconvenience of the whole situation, DPF deletes become popular.

If you was to just remove the DPF filter from the exhaust the car would know and again illuminate the engine malfunction light. When we perform our DPF function delete we read the engines ECU (the brain) and remove this function from inside so it never knows it was there. we do this via various methods depending on the ECU but all with the same result - It allows us to physically remove the filter without the vehicle knowing. Going back to the legality's, if you was to physically take out the DPF then the MOT would see that and fail the vehicle, this is why many road users have their garage take the fillings inside the DPF out by either opening and smashing out or by drilling a hole through it, leaving the DPF un-marked and untouched from the outside to ensure the MOT does not see the tampering. If you do not physically remove the exhaust filter and just have a function delete to remove the engine malfunction light and to get the vehicle out of limp mode then the fumes from the engine will not be able to pass, this will cause strain on your turbo and engine, resulting in them eventually failing. Here at VSR we offer the DPF function delete as well as the physical removal, for off road users only of course.

EGR Delete: An EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) is another method to reduce emissions. The EGR does this by recirculating a portion of the air that has already been through the engine. Without going to deep, the idea is to reduce engine combustion temperatures and thus reduce pollutants. Unfortunately again its better for the environment but not so good for the vehicle. The air is no longer clean fresh air after it's been though the engine so by recirculating this back though causes carbon build up in around the EGR valve causing them to fail / stick. Again cleaning them is an option, however it inevitably will fail again at some point due to the soot and exhaust particles being recirculated. As you can imagine the EGR is not the only thing that has this issue, any components that the recirculated air passes on the way back through the engine will also become filled with soot / carbon, a common example of this would be swirl flaps failing due to carbon build up. There are plates you can buy to block off the EGR valve which will stop the exhaust gasses recirculating back through the engine, however without the function delete the engines ECU (the brain) will detect this and cause the engine malfunction light to illuminate. Depending on the vehicle the function delete can be done alone without the need to block it off as we can ensure it doesn't open as part of the service. In some cases a blanking plate would be required, an example of this would be if your EGR has failed in the open position.

AdBlue / SCR Delete: AdBlue is a more modern method to reduce emissions used by car manufacturers. Simply put AdBlue is a liquid that you re-fill on your vehicle, it is injected into the exhaust to mix with the exhaust gasses and reduce the NOx output of the vehicle. These systems fail in all sorts of ways whether that's the injector failing, the Ad-Blue level sensor or the NOx sensor as well as many more, all failures are expensive to fix. A large issue is when these systems fail in some cases the vehicle will no longer run or in most cases will have a milage countdown on, a countdown that can not be reset without the repair and resulting in a non-start once the milage has reduced down to 0. Due to the high expense of the repair, inconvenience of the milage countdown and in some cases the smaller expense of having to re-fill the AdBlue, the function delete has become a very popular option for a lot of people. An AdBlue function delete will remove the need to re-fill the AdBlue as well as remove the risk of any future failings. If your vehicle already has AdBlue issues then in most cases we can Perform our delete service rather than the repair. In some cases, vehicle and specific failure dependant it is not possible to remove the function once the fault is present, if your AdBlue has failed already and would like to know if a function delete would work then you can contact us for more details.
